Helpful tips for winter driving

November has rolled around once again which means a lot of things. The holidays are coming up, the weather is getting cooler, and the snow is on its way. With snow come tougher driving conditions. We all know that driving through snow and ice can be hard, but it’s even harder when other motorists don’t know what they’re doing. Check out some of our tips for driving in the wintertime so you stay safe on the roads.

How to stay safe on the roads in the snow

Go slow

This sounds obvious, but it’s true. Driving slower is a simple yet incredibly effective way to be safer in the snow. Accidents often happen because the drivers couldn’t slow down in time and they ended up sliding into a collision. In heavy snow, go at least 5 to 10 miles per hour under the speed limit. You might run a tad bit late, but you’d be even later if you got in an accident.

Watch the road ahead

Even if you drive slowly and safely, that doesn’t mean others will. Keep an extra sharp eye out for other motorists so you can prepare for the unexpected. Look at the road ahead but also check your mirrors every so often.

Always know when you have to apply the brakes. Braking suddenly can cause you to slide uncontrollably. Apply the brakes early so you come to a stop when you need to. If you think you have weak brakes, it’s probably best to just stay home.

When driving out in the snow, keep your headlights (and fog lights if you have them) on at all times. This helps you see, but more importantly, it helps others locate you. Also, don’t surprise any other drivers. Turn on your blinkers ahead of time so they can react accordingly.
